Japanese Travel Phrases

Greetings and Politeness

1. こんにちは → Konnichiwa → Hello

2. おはよう → Ohayou → Good morning

3. こんばんは → Konbanwa → Good evening

4. ありがとう → Arigatou → Thank you

5. ありがとうございます → Arigatou gozaimasu → Thank you (more polite)

6. すみません → Sumimasen → Excuse me / Sorry

7. お願いします → Onegai shimasu → Please

8. じゃあまた → Ja mata → Goodbye (casual)

9. 失礼します → Shitsurei shimasu → Goodbye (formal)

10. はじめまして → Hajimemashite → Nice to meet you

Getting Around

1. [場所] はどこですか？ → [Place] wa doko desu ka? → Where is [place]?

Example:
駅はどこですか？
Eki wa doko desu ka?
Where is the station?

2. 料金はいくらですか？ → Ryokin wa ikura desu ka? → How much is the fare?

3. [場所]へお願いします → [Place] e onegai shimasu → To [place], please

Example:
東京へお願いします
Tokyo e onegai shimasu
To Tokyo, please

4. この電車/バスは[場所]へ行きますか？ → Kono densha/basu wa [place] e ikimasu ka? → Does this train/bus go to [place]?

5. 道に迷いました → Michi ni mayoimashita → I’m lost

6. 歩いてどのくらいかかりますか？ → Aruite dono kurai kakarimasu ka? → How long does it take to walk?

7. 近くにトイレはありますか？ → Chikaku ni toire wa arimasu ka? → Is there a restroom nearby?

Dining

1. [人数]人です → [Number] nin desu → A table for [number], please

Example:
二人です
Futari desu
For two, please

2. メニューをお願いします → Menyu o onegai shimasu → Menu, please

3. 早くお願いします → Hayaku onegai shimasu → Can you make it quick?

4. [品目]のアレルギーです → [Item] no arerugi desu → I’m allergic to [item]

5. お会計お願いします → Okaikei onegai shimasu → The bill, please

Shopping

1. これはいくらですか？ → Kore wa ikura desu ka? → How much is this?

2. もっと安くできますか？ → Motto yasuku dekimasu ka? → Can you make it cheaper?

3. クレジットカードは使えますか？ → Kurejitto kado wa tsukaemasu ka? → Do you accept credit cards?

4. [サイズ]のサイズはありますか？ → [Size] no saizu wa arimasu ka? → Do you have [size]?

Example:
Lサイズはありますか？
L saizu wa arimasu ka?
Do you have size large?

5. 試着してもいいですか？ → Shichaku shitemo ii desu ka? → Can I try it on?

6. 割引の品はありますか？ → Waribiki no shina wa arimasu ka? → Are there any discounted items?

7. これを包んでください → Kore o tsutsunde kudasai → Please wrap this

At the Hotel

1. 予約したいです → Yoyaku shitai desu → I want to make a reservation

2. [人数]人の部屋 → [Number] nin no heya → Room for [number] people

Example:
三人の部屋
San nin no heya
Room for three people

3. 空いた部屋がありますか？ → Aita heya ga arimasu ka? → Are there any vacant rooms?

4. 早くチェックインできますか？ → Hayaku chekku-in dekimasu ka? → Can I check in early?

5. チェックアウトは何時ですか？ → Chekku-auto wa nanji desu ka? → What time is check-out?

6. ワイファイがありますか？ → Wai-fai ga arimasu ka? → Is there Wi-Fi?

Sightseeing and Culture

1. 写真を撮ってもいいですか？ → Shashin o tottemo ii desu ka? → Can I take photos?

2. 入場料はいくらですか？ → Nyujoryo wa ikura desu ka? → How much is the admission fee?

3. ここは何時まで開いていますか？ → Koko wa nanji made aite imasu ka? → Until what time is this place open?

4. ここについて説明してください → Koko ni tsuite setsumei shite kudasai → Please explain about this place

5. ガイド付きのツアーに参加したいです → Gaido tsuki no tsua ni sanka shitai desu → I want to join a guided tour

Communication

1. 英語を話せますか？ → Eigo o hanasemasu ka? → Do you speak English?

2. ゆっくり話してください → Yukkuri hanashite kudasai → Please speak slowly

3. 書いてください → Kaite kudasai → Please write it down

Emergencies

1. 助けて！ → Tasukete! → Help!

2. 医者を呼んでください → Isha o yonde kudasai → Please call a doctor

3. 病院はどこですか？ → Byouin wa doko desu ka? → Where is the hospital?

4. [品目]をなくしました → [Item] o nakushimashita → I lost my [item]

Example:
パスポートをなくしました
Pasupoto o nakushimashita
I lost my passport

財布をなくしました
Saifu o nakushimashita
I lost my wallet

5. 警察を呼んでください → Keisatsu o yonde kudasai → Please call the police

6. 気分が悪いです → Kibun ga warui desu → I feel unwell

7. この薬は何ですか？ → Kono kusuri wa nan desu ka? → What is this medicine?
