GREETINGS AND BASIC JAPANESE PHRASES
1. こんにちは (konnichiwa) : Hello

2. おはようございます (ohayou gozaimasu) : Good morning

3. はじめまして!( hajimemashite) : Nice to meet you

4. さようなら ( sayounara) : Goodbye

5. お願いします ( onegaishimasu) : Please

6. ありがとうございます ( arigatou gozaimasu) : Thank you

7. どういたしまして(dou itashimashite) : You’re welcome

8. すみません ( sumimasen) : Excuse me/Sorry

9. はい ( hai) : Yes

10. いいえ ( iie) : No

11. いただきます ( itadakimasu) : Let’s Eat/ “Bon Appetit”

You should also remember this phrase’s pair: ごちそうさま (gochisousama) or ごちそうさまでした (gochisousama deshita).

These phrases are used at the end of a meal and translate as “What a good meal,” or “Thank you for the meal”, the latter being the more polite form.

12. 分かりません ( wakarimasen) : I don’t understand

13. 日本語を話しません ( nihongo o hanashimasen) : I don’t speak Japanese

14. 英語を話しますか?(eigo o hanashimasu ka?) : Do you speak English?

15. もう一度言ってください ( mou ichido itte kudasai) : Can you please repeat that?

16. ゆっくり話してください ( yukkuri hanashite kudasai) : Can you please speak slowly?

17. お名前は何ですか? (onamae wa nan desu ka?) : What is your name?

18. 私の名前は… (watashi no namae wa…) : My name is…

19. これは いくらですか?( kore wa ikura desu ka?) : How much does this cost? —

Or, if you’re pointing at something that you can’t reach, you say “それは いくらですか?”
これ and それ literally just mean “this” and “that.”

20. 助けてもらえますか?( tasukete moraemasuka?) : Can you please help me?

21. (ここ) に行きたいです ((koko) ni ikitai desu) : I want to go… (here)

Say ここ if you have an address written down or a point marked on a map of where you want to go.
If you know the name or address of the place where you want to go, simply say the place name followed by に行きたいです.

For example, if you want to go to Shinjuku station, you simply say “新宿駅に行きたいです” — Shinjuku eki ni ikitai desu.

ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS
Simply say wherever it is that you want to go followed by どこですか? — doko desu ka?.

22. … はどこですか? (…wa doko desu ka?) : Where is the…?

23. 私達がどこにいるのか、地図で教えてください
(watashitachi ga doko ni iru no ka, chizu de oshiete kudasai)
Can you please show me where we are on the map?

This might seem like an odd question (and a bit of a mouthful), but it can be a lot more helpful than asking for directions from someone who doesn’t know English.

24. 近いですか?(chikai desu ka?) : Is it near?

25. 遠いですか?(tooi desu ka?) : Is it far?

26. この住所まで連れて行ってください
(kono jyuushyo made tsureteitte kudasai)
Take me to this address, please

27. 料金はいくらですか? (ryoukin wa ikura desu ka?) : What is the fare?

28. ここで止まってください (koko de tomatte kudasai) : Stop here, please

29. このバスは … に行きますか?(kono basu wa … ni ikimasu ka?) : Does this bus go to (street name)?

30. その電車は___で止まりますか (sono denshya wa ___ de tomarimasu ka?) : Does that train stop at ___?

31. 地図をお願いします (chizu o onegai shimasu) : A map, please

32. このホテル (kono hoteru) : This hotel

33. 地下鉄 (chikatetsu) : The subway

34. 電車の駅 (denshya no eki) : The train station

35. バス停 (basutei) : The bus stop

36. 出口 (deguchi) : The exit

37. 入口 (iriguchi) : The entrance

38. トイレ (toire) : The bathroom

Receiving Directions

39. まっすぐ行ってください (massugu itte kudasai) : Go straight ahead

40. 左に曲がってください ( hidari ni magatte kudasai) : Turn left

41. 右に曲がってください (migi ni magatte kudasai) : Turn right

EATING AND DRINKING IN JAPAN

42. 二人 用のテーブルをお願いします
futari you no teeburu o onegai shimasu
A table for two, please

You can also replace futari with the number of people who you need to have seated:
一人 (hitori) : one
三人 (sannin) : three
四人 (yonin) : four

43. メニューをお願いします (menyuu o onegai shimasu) : The menu, please

44. 水をお願いします (mizu o onegai shimasu) : Water, please

45. ビールを二杯お願いします (beeru o nihai onegai shimasu) : Two beers, please

46. これを (一つ、二つ) お願いします?
kore o (hitotsu, futatsu) onegai shimasu?
Can I please have (one, two) of this? —

47. ベジタリアン用の料理がありますか?
( bejitarian youno ryouri ga arimasu ka?)
Do you have a vegetarian dish?

It might work better to say “これは肉ですか?” — kore wa niku desu ka?, to say “is this meat?”

Follow up with “私は肉を食べません” — watashi wa niku o tabemasen, which means “I don’t eat meat,” if you want to make yourself understood.

48. 大丈夫です (daijyoubu desu) : That’s okay

You can also use this expression to ask someone if they’re okay. Just add the question particle ka to the end: 大丈夫ですか ? — daijyoubu desu ka?

49. お勘定をお願いします (okanjyou o onegai shimasu) : The check, please

50. 乾杯 (kanpai!) : Cheers!

51. おいしかったです (oishikatta desu) : It was delicious

52. 水 (mizu) : Water

53. ワイン (wain) : Wine

54. ビール (beeru) : Beer

55. 肉 (niku) : Meat

56. 鶏肉 (toriniku) : Chicken

57. 豚肉 (butaniku) : Pork

58. 牛肉 (gyuuniku) : Beef

59. 魚 (sakana) : Fish

60. ご飯 (gohan) : Rice

61. パン (pan) : Bread

62. 野菜 (yasai) : Vegetables

63. 果物 (kudamono) : Fruit

64. お茶 (ochya) : Tea

65. コーヒー (coohii) : Coffee

GOING SHOPPING
When you walk into a store or restaurant in Japan, you will be met with cries of いっらしゃいませ! (Irrashya imase!)

66. これをお願いします (kore o onegai shimasu) : I would like this

67. それを一つお願いします (sore o hitotsu onegai shimasu) : I would like one of those

68. これはいくらですか? (kore wa ikura desu ka? ) : How much does this cost?

69. 現金でお願いします (genkin de onegai shimasu) : I would like to pay in cash

70. クレジットカードでお願いします
(kurejitto kaado de onegai shimasu)
I would like to pay by credit card
